Science, Technology, and Society

The Science, Technology, and Society degree belongs under the umbrella of Science & Technology Studies, an interdisciplinary field that has been around since the 1970s but which has really taken off in the 21st century.

Science & Technology Studies emphasizes understanding the impacts of science and technology on society – and vice versa. It sees the two (science/technology on one hand and society on the other) as inseparable. Scientific discoveries and technological advances always happen in a particular social context, after all. Science & Technology Studies therefore emphasizes understanding the history of the science/technology we use, the cultures within and surrounding scientific practice, and the stories we tell about science and technology.
